What are the Parts of a Dental Bridge?

We use custom-made bridges as a fixed solution to the gaps left by missing teeth. There are several different types of bridge, but the most commonly used consists of a false tooth located between two crowns which fit over the teeth either side of a gap. They can also be held in place with dental implants.

A dental bridge essentially consists of:

• A pontic or false tooth used to replace the missing tooth, which is made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials.
• Two crowns - serving to anchor the false tooth in place.

Maryland Bridges

As we are keen to take a minimally invasive approach to dentistry, we also offer Maryland bridges. These are cemented to the enamel of the adjacent teeth, which means there is no need to remove any healthy tooth tissue to accommodate them. They are also made from zirconia for incredibly natural-looking results.

Do Missing Teeth Need to be Replaced?

Yes, missing teeth must be replaced for many reasons:

• To improve your appearance.
• To reduce the strain on the teeth at either side of the missing tooth.
• To prevent the neighbouring teeth from leaning into the resulting gap and altering the bite.
• To prevent gum disease and tooth decay due to accumulation of food in the gap.
